Jack Lawrence and Jon Garon to Teach and Perform at Transatlantic Bluegrass Picking Weekend in November

Jack LawrenceJack Lawrence will be teaching flatpick guitar and performing at the Transatlantic Bluegrass Weekend November 7-9, 2008 in Newport Pembrokeshire. He will be joined by Jon Garon, founder of My Favorite Guitars, who will be teaching the fingerstyle guitar class. Jon is a great teacher and entertainer, and features in the new instructional DVD "Travis-Style Guitar Techniques". Jon Garon regularly performs with Jack Lawrence, Clay Hess, John Wheat and many other top acoustic musicians.

Jack Lawrence, well known as Doc Watson's partner since the early 1980's, has been called a "flatpicking powerhouse." His recordings and performances combine exciting, high spirited and innovative guitar solos with tasteful phrasing in his own inventive style.  Jack grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and as a youngster, took this opportunity to meet and learn from some of the finest players in the business. Performers of the day such as Buck Owens, Don Rich, Bill Monroe, Leon Rhodes, George Shuffler, and Flatt and Scruggs exposed Jack to a variety of styles emerging in the 1950's and 60's. From these early experiences, Jack developed his own talents and found his major influences to be Doc Watson, Clarence White and Django Reinhardt.

In the fall of 1971, Lawrence joined one of the pioneer bands of modern bluegrass, The New Deal String Band. Within months, he was off to Louisville, Kentucky to join forces with The Bluegrass Alliance. In 1983, Jack began playing with Doc Watson. Over the years, the two musicians have developed a brilliant guitar partnership, capitalizing on both their strengths. Lawrence tours extensively with Watson and also as a solo artist throughout the US and Europe. Jack's has taught at bluegrass and flatpicking camps across the US, including Steve Kaufman's Kamp and Merlefest.

In addition to the two-day workshops, there will be a great show on Saturday night with Jack Lawrence, Jon Garon and friends, and lots of picking and jamming all weekend. The charge for the two day workshop is only £25 and with the hotels and B&B's offering off-season rates, it's a great time to come to Newport, Pembrokeshire for a weekend! If we have enough interest, we will be adding workshops for other instruments as well - so let us know!

You can see Jack Lawrence with Doc Watson here, and here's Jon Garon on guitar (with Clay Hess on mandolin)

The 2nd Annual Transatlantic Bluegrass School, is being held in the beautiful coastal village of Newport, Pembrokeshire May 6-10, 2009. Our classes are being taught by some of the top bluegrass musicians in the US, who are also highly regarded for their skill as teachers. Our tutors for 2009 are Claire Lynch (singing/songwriting), Ross Nickerson (banjo) and Missy Raines (double bass), Jim Hurst (guitar), Emory Lester (mandolin) and Jason Thomas (fiddle). For further information about the course and our instructors and visit our website . We also invite you to join our forum where you'll find news, views and the latest course updates.

There will be morning and afternoon sessions, but you'll also have some free time during the day to pick with other students, take a walk on beautiful Newport Beach or just relax and enjoy the surroundings. In addition to your daily classes there'll be other workshops and social activities including - of course - evening jamming at the local pubs! We've scheduled an instructor's concert on Saturday evening and with the line-up of musicians coming, it's guaranteed to be absolutely outstanding! You're going to love it!

On Wednesday evening, September 7th, there will be a reception party where you'll have a chance to meet your instructors and fellow students, have a meal, and socialise before the classes begin. This will be followed by picking sessions at a few pubs in the village. Classes will begin Thursday, May 7th, with three days of instruction with your chosen tutor. There may be assistants available to help out, but do to our smaller class sizes, everyone will be taught by the main instructor. We are also scheduling a day in which students can choose between a variety of morning and afternoon workshops. These electives will give students the opportunity to take classes with some of the other instructors, or to focus on specific skills involving their chosen instrument.

It was very important to us to make our bluegrass school affordable for all our students, and to give participants choices that will make it a The view from one of our classroomsgreat experience for everyone. We decided to hold it in the beautiful seaside village of Newport, Pembrokeshire because of its outstanding beauty, charm and friendly village atmosphere. Most locations are within walking distance, and there is a choice of lovely, but affordable, accommodation including hotels and B&Bs, two caravan parks and camping areas. Local restaurants and eateries offer delicious food for any budget. Many visitors from around the world come to visit our coast every year and we’ll be posting photos of the area and details regarding accommodation choices soon.

To offer more individual attention for participants we are limiting enrolment to 20 students for each instrument. We'll be announcing all our tutors  shortly. Given the limited number of spaces available for each class, we recommend that you reserve your space without delay.

The total cost for the course, including all activities, performances, and elective workshops is only £195. The booking form with additional details is available on our website.

All announcements will be posted on our forum, so if you're not already a member, please sign up to receive updates.

We look forward to seeing you in May!
