Scholarships Available for Transatlantic Bluegrass School
|
Tuesday, January 1, 2008
|
|
Transatlantic Bluegrass School has established a scholarship program, which will offer free tuition
to younger bluegrass musicians who might otherwise not be able to
participate. Spaces will be available in each of the classes
being held May 7-11, 2008 in the coastal village of Newport in
Pembrokeshire, Wales.
The school features world-class tutors including
Bobby Hicks (fiddle), Kenny Smith (flatpick guitar), Amanda Smith
(vocals), Emory Lester (mandolin), Ross Nickerson (5-string banjo) and
Mike Bub (string bass). This scholarship program has been developed in an
effort to encourage the development and appreciation of bluegrass music in
musicians between 16-25 years of age. Younger musicians will be considered, but would be required to be accompanied by a parent or other legal guardian.
The Transatlantic Bluegrass School was established by US and
UK musicians to promote traditional and contemporary bluegrass music generally
and to enable musicians within the EU to study with the very finest musicians
from the US. Bluegrass music will only thrive if we continue to encourage and
support young bluegrass musicians with a serious interest in playing and
performing. We are delighted to be able to use this scholarship program to
extend access to those dedicated individuals who will become our next
generation of fine bluegrass musicians.

Fiddle Legend to Teach at Transatlantic Bluegrass School May 7-11, 2008
| Thursday, 11 October 2007 |
|
Think of some of the greatest historic fiddle tracks of all time
played by the bluegrass band that defined the genre, Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass
Boys: “Wheel Hoss,” “Roanoke,” “Cheyenne,” and “Big Mon” among many other
classics… then throw in other unforgettable fiddle work on albums by Ricky
Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, The Bluegrass Album Band, J. D. Crowe, and Jim and
Jesse McReynolds. The fiddle of BOBBY HICKS has been heard on all these, and
more, for over 50 years. In fact, ask most fiddlers to name their top fiddle
tracks and favourite fiddle players and Bobby Hick’s name will invariably be
right there at the top everyone’s lists.
From those classic tracks of the 1950’s and the Grammy winning “Southern
Flavor” of the 1980’s with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, through the
Bluegrass Album Band recordings with J. D. Crowe and Tony Rice, to more recent
work on Grammy award winning releases by Ricky Skaggs including “Bluegrass
Rules”, “Ancient Tones”, and “Soldiers of the Cross” and his own extremely
influential and much admired solo and duet fiddle albums including “Fiddle
Patch” and “Darkness on the Delta” (with Kenny Baker) Bobby Hicks has defined
the role of the fiddle in bluegrass.
Transatlantic Bluegrass School is incredibly honoured to announce that this
truly legendary fiddle player will be joining our faculty in 2008 to teach the
bluegrass and country fiddle styles for which he has been admired for so long.
This is a rare opportunity to learn from quite literally one of the very best
and most respected fiddlers in the entire history of bluegrass music. Places
are strictly limited and demand is expected to exceed the availability of
places, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Other
faculty members during the May 2008 Bluegrass School, to be held in the
picturesque coastal village of Newport, Pembrokeshire, Wales, include Kenny and
Amanda Smith (formerly Lonesome River Band and now together as the Kenny and
Amanda Smith Band) teaching flatpicking guitar and bluegrass vocals, Ross
Nickerson (author of the Banjo Encyclopedia) taking the 5-string banjo class,
and Mike Bubb (formerly of the Del McCoury Band and currently with the Dale Ann
Bradley Band) teaching string bass. The mandolin tutor will be announced
shortly.
The total cost for the course, including all activities, performances and elective workshops is only £195. The booking form with additional details is available here:

Transatlantic Bluegrass School
We're pleased to announce Transatlantic Bluegrass School, a
new bluegrass school in Wales being held in the beautiful coastal village of Newport,
Pembrokeshire. Our 'master classes' are being taught by some of the top
bluegrass musicians in the US, who are also highly regarded for their skill as
teachers. The tutors that
have already been confirmed are Kenny Smith (guitar), Ross Nickerson (banjo) and
Amanda Smith (singing). Our other tutors
(fiddle, mandolin, upright bass) will be announced shortly. For further information about the course and our instructors and visit our website . We also invite you to join our forum where you'll find news, views and the latest course updates.
The
instrument classes are not designed for the absolute beginner. To get the most
out of them you should have an understanding of the basics of playing your
instrument. If we have enough beginners wanting to take the course, we may look
into an additional class, so please let us know! The singing class does not
require previous training, just the enthusiasm and desire to learn to sing lead
and/or harmony bluegrass vocals.
There
will be morning and afternoon sessions, but you'll also have some free time
during the day to pick with other students, take a walk on beautiful Newport Beach or just relax and enjoy the
surroundings. In addition to your daily classes there'll be other workshops and
social activities including - of course - evening jamming at the local pubs!
We've scheduled an instructor's concert on Saturday evening and with the line-up
of musicians coming, it's guaranteed to be absolutely outstanding! You're going
to love it!
Another concert featuring our instrucutors is being organised as well, which we'll be announcing on the forum shortly. We're also having an open mic one night to give the students a
chance to perform as well.
On
Wednesday evening, September 7th, there will be a reception party where you'll have a chance to
meet your instructors and fellow students, have a meal, and socialise before the
classes begin. This will be followed by picking sessions at a few pubs in the
village. Classes will begin Thursday, September 8th, with three days of instruction with your chosen tutor. There
may be assistants available to help out, but do to our smaller class sizes,
everyone will be taught by the main instructor. We are also scheduling a day in
which students can choose between a variety of morning and afternoon workshops.
These electives will give students the opportunity to take classes with some of
the other instructors, or to focus on specific skills involving their chosen
instrument.
It was
very important to us to make our bluegrass school affordable for all our
students, and to give participants choices that will make it a great experience
for everyone. We decided to hold it in the beautiful seaside village of Newport,
Pembrokeshire because of its outstanding beauty, charm and friendly village
atmosphere. Most locations are within walking distance, and there is a choice of
lovely, but affordable, accommodation including hotels and B&Bs, two caravan
parks and camping areas. Local restaurants and eateries offer delicious food for
any budget. Many visitors from around the world come to visit our
coast every year and we’ll be posting photos of the area and details regarding
accommodation choices soon.
To offer
more individual attention for participants we are limiting enrolment to 20
students for each instrument. We'll be announcing all our tutors shortly. Given
the limited number of spaces available for each class, we recommend that you reserve your space without delay.
The total
cost for the course, including all activities, performances, and elective
workshops is only £195. The booking form with additional details is available
on our website.
All
announcements will be posted on our forum, so if you're not already a member,
please sign up to receive updates.
We look
forward to seeing you in May!

Bluegrass Wales Has a New Forum!
We're pleased to announce Transatlantic Bluegrass, a new
website and forum bringing together bluegrass enthusiasts from either side of
the Atlantic. It’s a place where you can find bluegrass news and views, and talk
about instruments and repair, artists and new releases, sound and recording,
live gigs, and other bluegrass topics. We will be adding interviews and other
features soon.
With its international focus, we hope that the forum will
also encourage touring and travel for bands and musicians, as well as those
wishing to attend festivals and bluegrass schools abroad. The website is at this location. We look forward
to seeing you there!

Announcing the Fiddle Hangout
Eric
Schlange, creator and webmaster of the popular Banjo Hangout has announced a
new website for fiddle players. It has all the same features as Banjo Hangout,
including discussion forums, a free homepage with blogging capabilities, photo
albums, classified section, MP3 music archives, events calendar, and free drawings. Eric
told us that other features, such as tab/sheet music will be added. The site has
only been ‘live’ since Friday, June 22, and is already averaging 2,000 visitors

The
mission of the Fiddle Hangout is to become the world's most comprehensive
fiddle resource by bringing the world's fiddlers together into one online
community. After visiting the site ourselves, we think it’s off to a great
start. So, if you play fiddle, definitely visit the Fiddle
